Epstein Barr virus (EBV) has the characteristic morphology of the Herpesviridae family of viruses of which it is a member. EBV is the etiological agent of the infectious mononucleosis, which is an acute illness characterized clinically by sore throat, fever and lymphadenopathy, sometimes with rare symptoms like myalgias and arthralgias. The Monospot test is sensitive and spesific in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. In cases of hetemphile antibodies negative mononucleosis, sera should be always tested for VCA-lgM.

Keywords: Epstein Barr virus, infectious mononucleosis, VCA-lgM, arthralgies.
