OBJECTIVE : To compare the clinical findings and outcome in patients with subcortical infarction in the territory of lentikulostriate artery (LSA) and with cortical infarction in the territory of middle cerebral artery (MCA).
MATERIALS AND METHOS: Fifteen patients with LSA and 18 patients with MCA infarction, who had cranial computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging at the onset-of the symptoms and/or 1 week after, were included in the study. Neurological findings and risk factors were enrolled. The outcome in the two groups were compared using NIH stroke scale and Barthel index.
RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in NIH stroke scale values and Barthel uindexes.
CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in the outcome between the two groups. Our results suggested that the main factor to decide the outcome is the involvement of the motor system.
