OBJECTIVE: In this study our goal was to determine the change of antibiotic susceptibility of the gram negative rods throghout the years.
STUDY DESIGN: During 1989-90 and 1996-97 bacteria isolated from different materials sent to the laboratory and their susceptibility to antibiotics were examined retrospectively. The difference between the years was tested statistically by chi-square test.
RESULTS: Ther was an apparent decrease in susceptibility to antibiotics like Clavulonic acid+amoxicillin, ceftazidim, ceftriaxone and increase in susceptibility to gentamicin in Klebsiella spp. There was increase in susceptibility to aminoglycozides in Pseudomonos spp., decrease in susceptibility to Clavulonicacid+amoxicillin and ceftriaxone in E.coli, increase in susceptibility to ceftazidim and aminoglycozides in Proteus spp.
CONCLUSION: According to our results every health center should perform its antibiotic susceptibility tests for periods of time in order to modify the antibiotic usage.
